You’ll need a SIM card to enable cellular connectivity for the TCU. Here’s how to proceed:
Recommended Provider: SIM card from provider viaaq mobile, out-of-the-box integration with OpenCARWINGS, an affordable data plan, and support for Binary SMS
SIM Type: Ensure it’s a standard Mini SIM (2FF) or compatible with an adapter.
Data Plan: Select a plan with at least 1-5 MB of monthly data without a navigation unit, or 5-10 MB of monthly data with a navigation unit (the navigation unit does periodic updates of nearby charging stations).
Alternative Providers: If viaaq mobile isn’t available or isn't suitable for you, use a provider with affordable data and SMS support (e.g., AT&T, T-Mobile prepaid SIMs), but you will need a way to send Binary SMS via the internet, such as Seven.io, gatewaysms, the OpenCARWINGS SMS gateway, or a similar solution or your own webhook-based setup.
Why a second SIM card may be necessary: A second SIM may be required for sending SMS. This usually involves using a USB modem, as explained below.
IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT: Your SIM in the TCU needs to be able to receive Binary SMS (no UDH)! However, not all SMS providers support binary SMS messages, especially when sent from abroad, which are sometimes marked as spam. Be prepared to use the OpenCARWINGS SMS Gateway with a modem, in case your provider blocks incoming SMS from online SMS gateways.
Step 2: Access the TCU
The TCU is typically located behind the glovebox on RHD models (the physical location is the same on LHD cars) in the Nissan LEAF. Follow these steps:
Preparation: Turn off the vehicle and remove the key from the ignition to avoid electrical issues.
Glovebox Removal:
Open the glovebox and empty its contents.
Locate and remove the screws (usually 2-4) along the edges or inside the glovebox.
Gently pull the glovebox forward; it may be held by clips—use the trim tool to pry it loose if needed.
Disconnect any wiring (e.g., glovebox light) by pressing the connector tabs and pulling.
Locate the TCU: Behind the glovebox, you’ll see a rectangular metal or plastic unit (about the size of a small book) with wiring harnesses and an antenna connection—this is the TCU.

Disassembly (1:50 - 7:50)
Note: Work carefully to avoid damaging clips or wiring. Take photos of the setup before proceeding, for reference.
Transfer the .apk file to your Android device (via USB, email, etc.).
Enable “Install from Unknown Sources” in Settings > Security.
Open the file and install the app.
Connect to TCU: Power on the vehicle to ACC mode (important). Use the app to connect to the TCU via Bluetooth OBD.
Set APN (also the TSP APN):
Open the app and locate the APN settings.
Enter the APN for your SIM provider (e.g., almost all Finnish operators use “internet”; viaaq mobile shows the APN in the subscription details; check your provider’s website for specifics).
Save and apply the settings.
Set Server Hostname (GDC and APN):
Enter the server URL in the TCU Configurator app.
Server information:
URL: http://biz-tcu.viaaq.eu
Port: 80
Save and apply the settings.
Note: Ensure your Android device has Bluetooth enabled and the car ignition is turned to ACC during configuration.
Note: If you have trouble reading the configuration of the TCU, turn off the Data Integrity Check in the TCU Configurator app.
Step 5: Complete Setup on Website
Complete the TCU setup via a web portal: sign in to OpenCARWINGS and follow the "Add Car" process.
Step 6: Configure your preferred SMS provider
Finalize the TCU activation by setting up an SMS provider in OpenCARWINGS settings:
Binary SMS: The providers shown in settings are limited to those capable of sending Binary SMS.
Verify: Do a data refresh to confirm the TCU is receiving SMS.
Note: Please clear all DTC codes before trying to send SMS! Active DTC codes may put the TCU into fault mode, causing it to refuse any commands.
Be aware: In rare cases, TCU services have been remotely disabled by Nissan, for unknown reasons. In this case, sending refresh commands won't do anything. You may need to send the "Service Provisioning" configuration command from the "TCU Configuration" tab, with all services set to "Active." Then try sending the refresh command again.
